The straight scoop from
Colonel Mustard

Oct. 29, 2008

We held serve by winning another game that we should win. Saturday was a nice comeback win. We continued the trend of improving our play in the second half of games. The defense stepped up and made plays when it needed to. The defensive line is definitely progressing as the season goes along. Ganz wasn't as sharp as he has been in recent games, but the offense still controlled the clock. Fumbles were a problem for the second consecutive week and prevented us from putting the game away in the fourth quarter.

We have become a ball-control offensive team. This strategy has been effective for three straight games and suits our personnel very well. Lucky has played as well lately as he has at any time in his career. Swift had a drop but he continues to have a great season including a punt return that was called back. I thought that the call of the middle screen with the fake to the outside was a terrific call. Baylor's defense was playing close to the line all day, so I was surprised we didn't go deep earlier. We are a grinding offense that requires a great many third-down conversions. But the ball-control strategy has worked and kept the defense off the field.

Now we head to Oklahoma with another chance to pull off an upset. The three other games are very winnable, so it is important to play well this week and maintain our confidence for the stretch run. Bo's working of the officials, although I like the fire, may be becoming counterproductive. It distracts his coaching efforts and at this point may be alienating the officials. We are improving every week, and that is why it is so important to get to a bowl for the extra practice time.

Keep the faith. GBR.
