Huskers fall to 5-5 as Trojans hold off NU’s late charge

The Huskers battled the Trojans down to the game’s final play but fell 28-20 to drop to 5-5 on the season.

The Nebraska offense, under Dana Holgorsen’s direction for the first time, managed just one touchdown. Two field goals and a pick-six accounted for the rest of the Huskers’ scoring.

After a 14-14 first half, the Huskers briefly took the lead to open the third quarter by driving 64 yards in 11 plays for a field goal, but USC quickly went back on top, 21-17, on a 48-yard touchdown pass.

Later in the period, Nebraska got the ball on the USC 16 when Ty Robinson forced a fumble and Mikai Gbayor recovered, but the Huskers came away with only three points, settling for Jon Hohl’s field goal to pull within 21-20.

Things looked bad for the Huskers when USC drove to the NU 10 early in the fourth quarter. Ceyair Wright, however, kept the deficit at one point by blocking the Trojans’ field goal attempt.

The reprieve was only temporary. The Trojans began leaning on Woody Marks’ strong runs, including a 34-yard gain on fourth down from near midfield. Quarterback Jayden Maiava’s short touchdown run gave the Trojans a 28-20 cushion with 2:45 left in the game.

With a series of passes, the Huskers drove to the USC 14 with five seconds left, but a false start was followed by an interception in the end zone on the game’s last play.

In the first half, Nebraska struck first on Ceyair Wright’s 45-yard pick-six, but the Trojans answered with touchdown drives of 86 and 75 yards on their next two possessions to go ahead 14-7. The Huskers responded with a 75-yard drive of their own, tying the game at 14 apiece on a 29-yard catch and run by Emmett Johnson.

Commentary

Stryker

The Huskers lost because despite having one of the more veteran offensive lines in the nation, they are still not physical enough at the point of attack.

Stukenholtz

If you could boil this game down to one sentence, it would be the following: One coach had the guts to go for it, one did not.

Christopherson

Did the Husker offense look better? More points will still be needed going forward, but the answer to the question is yes.

Rubek

The Blackshirts' standout showing against Ohio State three weeks ago looks more and more like a fluke.

Shatel

Make some plays, give up some plays, walk off with a loss. That’s 5-5 Nebraska.

So many things went right. ... But so many things went wrong, too.

Sherman

As Rhule said last week, he wants an offense that scores points. Nebraska got 13 from that side of the ball.
