Panthers show pluck, but Huskers roll

Northern Iowa clearly didn’t come to Lincoln just to collect a check.

The Panthers from the FCS ranks gave Nebraska a physical game, particularly with their clock-eating, run-heavy offense. But three first-half touchdowns — each one scored by a first-year Nebraska player — had the Huskers comfortably ahead for most of the evening.

Nebraska started things off with a 75-yard drive on the game’s opening possession, capped by an 18-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Raiola to Carter Nelson. UNI answered with a 10-minute drive that led to a field goal, which turned out to be the Panthers’ only points of the game.

An 18-yard TD pass from Raiola to Isaiah Neyor and a touchdown run of 10 yards by Jacory Barney had the Huskers up 21-3 at halftime. After a pair of Tristan Alvano field goals in the third quarter, Emmett Johnson capped the Huskers’ night with a 36-yard touchdown run in the game’s final five minutes.

Commentary

Stryker

When you don’t shoot yourself in the foot, things seem a lot more normal, and Nebraska is thriving on normality to open Matt Rhule’s second season.

Christopherson

Not an uncomfortable win by any means for Nebraska, though I sense the Blackshirts won't love some parts of ‘Tell The Truth’ film session.

Stukenholtz

You can be boring when you win. That muscle memory within this program has been long gone for some time, but Rhule is building it back up.

Shatel

This looks like a Nebraska team built to win Big Ten games. That certainly hasn’t always been the case.

Nebraska’s offense showed out in a game where its defense wasn’t up to standards.

Raiola’s presence makes games like this much more comfortable if you are a Husker fan.

What a place to be in. Off to one of the best starts by the Blackshirts this millennium, and yet, they’re not yet at their standard.
