Huskers fall to Illini in overtime

Luke Altmyer outdueled Dylan Raiola as the Illini traded scoring drives with the Huskers in regulation and then dominated overtime for a 31-24 win.

Nebraska had its chances late in the fourth quarter, but Raiola overthrew an open receiver in the end zone, and a field goal attempt from 39 yards was wide left.

Illinois needed just two plays to score its overtime touchdown, gashing the Blackshirts with a 21-yard run and then scoring easily on a short pass. The Huskers then went backward in their attempt to match the Illini’s score, suffering a false-start penalty and three quarterback sacks.

With that performance in overtime, Nebraska extended a nearly decade-long streak of failing to score in OT or to even get a first down.

Commentary

Stryker

The main problem for the Big Red was that as the second half wore on, they started absorbing body blows instead of handing them out.

Christopherson

In some ways, it was a stunner. Not that Nebraska lost. But that the Blackshirts, which have been considered a likely strength all offseason, never got a grip on the game.

Callahan

We saw just how special Dylan Raiola’s arm talent can be, but we also saw some of the question marks this team still has.

Stukenholtz

Fans of this program remember the sins of the past all too well, and they certainly cropped up again late in NU’s 31-24 overtime loss.

The Blackshirts found out quickly they weren’t facing Colorado’s porous offensive line.

The season is far from lost. There’s still some hope to be found for the future.

For the second week in a row, the Blackshirts failed to live up to their standard.

Yeah, it’s only one road win. But it was a huge moment for the program.
