Tigers’ late surge spells Husker doom

Nebraska, playing without star quarterback Dave Humm for half the game, had its Big 8 Championship thoughts dashed early by the upstart Missouri Tigers 21-10.

Humm, who had directed the Huskers to a 3-0 halftime lead, suffered a concussion early in the third period and was lost for the remainder of the contest.

With second-string quarterback Terry Luck at the controls, the Cornhuskers surged to a 10-0 fourth-quarter lead before the Missouri onslaught took place.

Led by quarterback Steve Pisarkiewicz and fullback Tony Galbreath, Missouri scored three times in the last stanza and held Nebraska scoreless for the final 11 minutes. It was the second time in two years that Nebraska had lost to Missouri in both teams’ Big 8 opener. Last year, Missouri upset the undefeated Huskers 13-12 in Columbia.

Before this game even started, many Husker fans feared an upset in the making because of what Missouri did during the 1972 season. Missouri traveled to Lincoln that year and lost 62-0. That following week the Tigers had to face Notre Dame in South Bend. But what seemed to be an insurmountable task proved to be a great college upset as Missouri defeated the Irish.

One week before this game, Missouri was being clobbered by Wisconsin 59-20 while Nebraska was trouncing Minnesota 54-0. Unfortunately for the Huskers, Missouri football history repeated itself and Nebraska went down to defeat.
