Blackshirts shut down Gophers
With the Nebraska Blackshirts at their best, Nebraska romped to a 54-0 win over the hapless Minnesota Gophers.
Nebraska’s defense held the Gophers to three first downs, 29 yards rushing and 35 yards passing. The Blackshirts also intercepted one pass and recovered one Minnesota fumble.
Nebraska scored on its first possession, marching 85 yards in 18 plays. The score came on a six-yard pass from Husker ace Dave Humm to fullback Tony Davis with 7:55 left in the first quarter.
Before the game was over, Nebraska scored seven more times and raised its 1974 record against Big Ten opponents to 2-1, beating Minnesota and Northwestern and losing to Wisconsin.
As 76,408 fans watched, Nebraska got 30 first downs, 402 yards rushing and 122 yards passing and was forced to punt only once.
Nebraska, now ranked No. 6 (AP), entered the Big 8 race against always tough Missouri, who was getting trounced by Wisconsin (59-20) when the Huskers were putting it to Minnesota.
