Owens, Sooners run roughshod over Huskers
Nebraska’s hopes for a 7-3 season and a bowl bid were smashed by Sooner Steve Owens, who staged a brilliant one-man attack to trigger a 47-0 licking before 45,000 fans and a national TV audience.
It was the worst defeat ever suffered by a Bob Devaney team.
Owens tore the Cornhuskers to shreds, scoring 5 touchdowns for a Big 8 record and netting 172 yards.
Down 28-0 at the half after Owens’ three-TD spree in the second quarter, the Huskers fought back and marched to the Sooner three before a fumble killed the scoring chance.
Nebraska ended its season with a 6-4 record, including 3-4 in Big Eight play.
