Rogers’ kick caps Husker rally from 14-0 deficit
Paul Rogers again kicked Nebraska to victory, this time with a 19-yard field goal with only 1:32 left in the game.
It was another rousing comeback win as the Huskers spotted the big, strong and talented Big Ten co-champs of 1967 a 14-0 lead. But Nebraska roared back for a 17-14 win before a throng of 55,362 fans to remain unbeaten and ranked in the top 10.
With 13:25 gone in the first quarter, Minnesota’s Maurice Forte bulled in to score after the Gophers got the ball at the NU 23 via a pass interception and 15-yard penalty.
Forte scored again with 6:04 left in the half after the Gophers jumped on a Husker fumble of a punt return at the NU 17.
Refusing to fold, Nebraska battled back to march 61 yards in five plays to pull up 14-7 at halftime. Big play in the drive was a 42-yard Ernie Sigler-to-Jim McFarland pass which carried to the Gopher 3. Joe Orduna scored and Paul Rogers kicked with 0:43 left in the half.
In the fourth quarter, Dana Stephenson picked off a Gopher pass and returned it 28 yards to the Minnesota 17. Three plays later, Sigler hit McFarland for a TD and Rogers kicked the tying point with 10:50 left in the game.
Sherwin Jarmon’s interception and 19-yard return, plus a piling penalty, gave the Huskers a chance for victory. Starting on the Gopher 38 late in the game, the Huskers drove to the two before stalling. Then, with 1:32 left in the game, Rogers booted his 19-yard beauty and Nebraska had win No. 3.
H’Max notes
• Nebraska’s winning drive was aided by two third-down conversions: a 16-yard pass from Sigler to McFarland on third and 9, and a 12-yard run by Orduna on third and 11.
• A pass play netted the Gophers a first down at the Nebraska 39 with five seconds left, but the game ended as the clock did not stop to allow the moving of the chains. That drew a fiery complaint from Minnesota coach Murray Warmath.
• Turnovers set up all 14 Minnesota points and 10 of Nebraska’s 17 points.
