Huskers start fast, clobber Utah
Nebraska’s Cornhuskers celebrated Band Day by jumping to a 17-0 first-quarter lead en route to a 31-0 win over Utah before 65,424 fans.
Paul Rogers, the soph hero of the Wyoming game, got the Huskers rolling with a 28-yard field goal the first time Nebraska got possession.
Utah fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Nebraska had the ball at the Redskin 18. Six plays later it was 10-0 as Mike Green plunged over with 9:36 left in the quarter and Rogers kicked the point.
Another Utah fumble at midfield set up a 53-yard Husker drive. An Ernie Sigler-to-Guy Ingles pass and a 19-yard run by Green were the big gains on the march, which was capped by Joe Orduna’s one-yard TD drive with 2:33 left in the opening quarter.
Frank Patrick came off the bench in the second quarter and tossed a 41-yard TD pass to end Tom Penney. It was Penney’s first Husker TD after two years of pass-catching stardom, and later in the game he was to suffer a fractured collarbone.
With a 24-0 halftime lead, the Husker defense kept Utah throttled. In the fourth quarter, Sigler wound up the scoring by hitting Jim McFarland with a six-yard TD pass.
The Huskers amassed 518 yards and the Scarlet defense held Utah to only 46 yards on the ground and a total of 138 yards.
