LATE SURGE PULLS HUSKERS PAST TIGERS
A record crowd of 48,878 jammed Memorial Stadium to see what many observers considered the unbeaten Cornhuskers’ first severe test since Minnesota. And the Missouri Tigers made it just that, battling the Huskers to a standstill for three quarters before yielding, 9-0.
Both teams had scoring opportunities; both teams staged rugged defensive stands to keep the stalemate in progress. Then, with 12:34 left in the fourth quarter, Tiger quarterback Gary Lane dropped back to pass from his own 14. Husker end Langston Coleman charged him hard, grabbed him and slung him in the end zone for a safety. At this point a 2-0 lead looked big – but also insecure.
Bob Churchich and Kent McCloughan teamed up to change the complexion in a hurry. With 6:32 left, Churchich eluded a hard rush by a Tiger end, escaped some would-be tacklers and fired a pass to McCloughan along the west sideline. McCloughan cut across the field, pulled free from one tackier and into the grasp of Tiger Johnny Roland. But at that point, Husker All-America tackle Larry Kramer peeled Roland off McCloughan with a shattering block and the NU speedster sprinted on to score a 37-yard clincher.
