Husker defense comes up big against Buffs
With some 12,000 Nebraska migrants on hand, the Nebraska Cornhuskers spotted the fiery Colorado Buffaloes a first-quarter field goal, then roared back for a 21-3 Big 8 decision.
It was win No. 6 of the year and No. 13 in succession and gave the Big Red a 3-0 bulge in the conference race. Kent McCloughan again proved his efficiency as a snagger of deflected passes, grabbing a long Bob Churchich aerial that was tipped at the CU 23 by Buff defender Hale Irwin, and sprinting to a 53-yard TD to put NU ahead to stay in the second period.
A Buff fumble at the CU 9 set up NU’s third-quarter tally, and the Huskers marched 80 yards in the fourth quarter for the clincher.
Meanwhile Nebraska’s awesome defense held Colorado to minus-3 yards rushing and 54 yards passing.
H’MAX NOTES
• Colorado’s field goal came after the Buffs got the ball on the NU 17 courtesy of an interception, one of three first-half turnovers by Churchich.
• The Huskers’ defensive performance capped a three-game stretch in which the Blackshirts allowed just 28 net rushing yards: South Carolina (28), Kansas State (3), Colorado (-3).
• McCloughan’s touchdown reception was reminiscent of his tipped-pass score against Minnesota.
