Churchich leads Huskers to win after Duda breaks leg
Nebraska’s hopes for a successful season appeared dashed to bits midway into the first quarter, but the stunned Cornhuskers held on for a 14-7 win over the Iowa State Cyclones.
Junior quarterback star Fred Duda suffered a broken leg early in the contest and was sidelined for the season. But sophomore Bob Churchich came in cold to engineer a 77-yard drive in the second quarter to put NU ahead to stay, 7-0. A 48-yard drive made it 14-0 in the third quarter before Cyclone Tony Baker broke a 58-yard sprint to wind up the scoring.
The Scarlet defense then took over to ensure win No. 3 of the season and the Huskers’ 10th victory in a row.
