Huskers fall to Boilermakers: Nebraska outyarded Purdue but came up short on the scoreboard as untimely penalties and other miscues haunted the Huskers on Homecoming Day.

Devine Ozigbo rushed for a career-high 170 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns and Adrian Martinez put up his first career 300-yard passing game. Nebraska was flagged 11 times for 136 yards in penalties.

Senior quarterback David Blough led Purdue, completing 25-of-42 passes for 328 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Brycen Hopkins led the Boilermakers with five catches for 103 yards, while Rondale Moore added eight receptions for 85 yards.

Nebraska drove 75 yards on the game’s opening possession and took a 7-0 lead, but the Huskers sputtered on offense and didn’t score again until the third quarter, when the Boilermakers had taken a 27-7 lead. After narrowing the deficit to 42-28, Martinez and the offense were unable to produce more points despite penetrating Purdue territory three times.

  • Nebraska sophomore receiver JD Spielman caught 10 passes for 135 yards (career highs are 11 catches & 200 yards, both against Ohio State in 2017) and a pair of 21-yard touchdown catches in the third quarter. It was the first multiple TD reception game of his career and gives him four TD catches this season and six in his career.
  • Spielman increased his career receiving yardage total to 1,082 yards. Spielman reached 1,000 receiving yards in his 15th career game, the fastest player to reach 1,000 yards receiving in NU history, bettering Johnny Rodgers who reached the mark in 16 games. Spielman is the 27th Husker overall to reach 1,000 career receiving yards.
  • Nebraska posted a season-high 582 yards of total offense. It’s the most yards Nebraska has had since Sept. 26, 2015 when it produced 610 yards of total offense against Southern Miss.
  • Today’s game marked Spielman’s third career 100-yard receiving game, adding to a school-record 200-yard receiving effort against Ohio State and 141 yards at Minnesota last season.
  • Nebraska senior running back Devine Ozigbo rushed 17 times for a career-high 170 yards and two touchdowns in the game, marking his fifth career 100-yard rushing game. Ozigbo had three 100-yard games in 2017, and one 100-yard game as a sophomore in 2016. His previous career rushing high was 112 yards against Wisconsin in 2017.
  • Ozigbo is the third different Husker with 100-yard rushing games this season, joining Adrian Martinez and Greg Bell who each topped the century mark against Colorado.
  • Nebraska senior receiver Stanley Morgan Jr. caught four passes for 69 yards in the game to increase his career receiving total to 2,012 yards. Morgan is the fifth Husker to reach 2,000 career receiving yards, joining Kenny Bell, Johnny Rodgers, Nate Swift and Jordan Westerkamp.
  • Morgan caught at least one pass for the 30th consecutive game, the fourth-longest streak in school history. Morgan has caught at least three passes in 16 straight games.
  • Freshman quarterback Adrian Martinez completed 25-of-42 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns, setting career highs in each of those categories. Martinez also rushed 18 times for 91 yards to account for a career-high 414 yards of total offense.
  • Nebraska scored on the opening drive of the game, marking the first time this season the Huskers have scored on its first possession. The Huskers’ five first downs matched its combined total of first downs on the opening drive of the first three games.
  • Redshirt freshman receiver Kade Warner earned his first career start in the game. It also marked Warner’s first career game played. He caught two passes for 16 yards.
  • Tight end Jack Stoll set career highs with four receptions for 51 yards.
  • Cornerback Dicaprio Bootle had a team-high three pass breakups, after registering five PBU last week at Michigan.
  • Nebraska’s loss ended a nine-game winning streak on Homecoming for Nebraska, and dropped the Huskers to 6-2 in Big Ten home openers.
