As the Huskers’ three-week wait for an Orange Bowl opponent continued, good news arrived as expected Tuesday with Nebraska’s No. 3 ranking in both major polls.
Notre Dame’s loss to Southern Cal knocked the Cotton Bowl-bound Irish to No. 6 in the AP and UPI rankings. That moved Nebraska up a notch in the UPI poll and strengthened the Huskers’ hold on the No. 3 spot in the AP rankings.
UPI, meanwhile, unveiled its All-America team. No Huskers made the first team, but on the No. 2 unit were offensive tackle Bob Newton, defensive tackle Dave Walline and linebacker Jerry Murtaugh. I-back Joe Orduna was honorable mention.
Also, Bob Devaney was one of eight big-school nominees for national coach of the year by the American Football Coaches Association.
