That First Championship Season
Dec. 2: Five Huskers on AP All-Big Eight team.

Five Huskers earned first-team honors Wednesday as the Associated Press unveiled its All-Big Eight squad.

The honorees: offensive tackle Bob Newton, defensive linemen Dave Walline and Ed Periard, linebacker Jerry Murtaugh and I-back Joe Orduna. Murtaugh was a unanimous pick.

Ten other Huskers earned honorable mention.

AP was not as generous to Nebraska as UPI and the Omaha World-Herald had been with their first-team selections. Seven Huskers made the UPI team, and eight were on the OWH squad.

Meanwhile, Ole Miss quarterback Archie Manning had the cast removed from his non-throwing arm Wednesday, making it more certain that he would play in Saturday night’s televised clash with Louisiana State. LSU needed to win that game to lock up an Orange Bowl berth opposite Nebraska. Manning had not played since suffering the injury Nov. 7.

In Lincoln, the Huskers continued their conditioning drills under the direction of trainers while the coaching staff made recruiting visits near and far. Full-pads work was set to resume Dec. 10.
