White squad prevails in first spring game of Rhule era

The Whites downed the Reds, 21-7, in Saturday’s Red-White spring game, a contest marred by eight turnovers.

All the scoring came in the first half as the Whites built a 21-7 lead and the Reds got their only score on a long fumble return.

Jeff Sims led all quarterbacks, completing 9 of 14 passes for 139 yards. The Georgia Tech transfer also had 14 rushing yards.

Former Nebraska coach Frank Solich was honored at halftime, when it was revealed that the Huskers’ new locker room will be named in his honor.

New defensive coordinator Tony White has some material here. Same goes for new offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield, especially at quarterback.

How much can we really take from an intrasquad game where every positive has to correspond with a negative?

Can a school forgive itself? This was a Nebraska spring game like no other. Call it an Exorcism. A Revival. An Awakening.

In a spring game that could have been the Matt Rhule Show for his first rodeo as NU’s skipper, the day instead focused on Solich as the Huskers’ guest of honor. That’s the way Rhule wanted it.

At times, the football was ugly. But the Huskers’ top offensive and defensive units performed well, considering they’ve operated in these new systems for only 15 practices.
