Oct. 12: Devaney guards against overconfidence.

With Nebraska’s defense drawing praise left and right, coach Bob Devaney was determined Monday not to let the Blackshirts’ success go to their heads.

“We don’t want them to get too satisfied,” Devaney said, “because you must improve in athletics. You don’t just stand still.”

That didn’t stop him from singling out linebacker Jerry Murtaugh, middle guard Ed Periard and defensive end Willie Harper for their performances in the 21-7 win over Missouri.

Periard’s infected foot was the only health issue of note as the Huskers began practicing for Saturday’s game at Kansas.

The 4-1 Jayhawks, Devaney said, “could be the toughest team we’ve faced.”
