Huskers hold off Wildcats, clinch bowl eligibility
After blowing a double-digit lead, Nebraska delivered a clutch fourth-quarter drive to beat Northwestern, 28-21. The Huskers are now bowl-eligible for a second consecutive season.
The Wildcats battled back to tie the game at 21 apiece after two quick touchdowns early in the third quarter had given the Huskers a seemingly comfortable 21-6 lead. Those Husker scores came via Kenneth Williams’ 95-yard kickoff return and Nyziah Hunter’s amazing toe-drag catch in the end zone to cap a short drive after Donovan Jones’ interception at the Northwestern 32.
The Wildcats answered with a pair of Caleb Komolafe TD runs — one for 56 yards — and it was a 21-21 game early in the fourth frame. Things appeared to be unraveling further for the Big Red when Dylan Raiola promptly threw an interception in Nebraska territory, but Husker linebacker Javin Wright picked off a Wildcat pass a few plays later to set up the winning drive from the Nebraska 36.
The Huskers were a perfect 4-for-4 on third down as they covered the 64 yards to paydirt in 13 plays. Raiola’s completions to Emmett Johnson, Hunter, Dane Key and Jacory Barney Jr. kept the drive alive, and Johnson capped things off with a 4-yard TD run, part of his 124-yard rushing performance.
Northwestern had more than 2½ minutes to work with but turned the ball over on downs after reaching the Nebraska 35. The Huskers then ran out the clock for their sixth win of the season.
