Huskers come back in final quarter toĀ trip the Terps

After throwing three interceptions that led to 17 Maryland points, Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola drove the Huskers 81 yards in the final minutes for the winning touchdown in a wild 34-31 game.

Minutes earlier, a twisting, tackle-breaking 50-yard run by Emmett Johnson to the Maryland 10 resulted in just a field goal, but those points by Kyle Cunanan proved to be crucial.

Taking over at their own 19 with 3:42 remaining after a Maryland punt, the Huskers got rolling with passes of 23 yards to tight end Luke Lindenmeyer and 33 yards to Nyziah Hunter — the latter of which Raiola threw as he was falling backwards. That put the Huskers on the Maryland 20. A pass to Heinrich Haarberg got Nebraska to the 3, and from there Raiola tossed a pass to Dane Key, who made a leaping catch just short of the goal line and twisted into the end zone for the touchdown.

The Terps still had a chance to tie or win in the 68 seconds that remained. A penalty for intentional grounding set them back, and they turned the ball over on downs at midfield when DeShon Singleton broke up Malik Washington’s fourth-down pass.

An emphatic third-down tackle for loss by Dasan McCullough at the start of the fourth quarter is what seemed to have turned the tide for Nebraska. The Terps had reeled off 17 points in a row and were driving in Husker territory. Instead of potentially adding to their 31-24 lead, Maryland punted from the Nebraska 40. The Husker offense responded by overcoming two holding penalties during the ensuing 83-yard drive for Cunanan’s fourth-quarter field goal.

Nebraska led 24-17 at the half, but Maryland quickly took a 31-24 lead on a 75-yard drive and a 67-yard pick-six. Maryland also had scored 10 of its 17 second-quarter points off a pair of Raiola interceptions.

Commentary

Stryker

Before delivering rapturous celebration, Raiola provided his share of wailing and gnashing of teeth to Husker Nation.

Raiola ... made three bad throws that Maryland took advantage of. Outside of those? You got the magic of Raiola.

A final drive for a memorable win upstages the throws that honestly would've hovered over this season awhile with a loss attached.

Credit Matt Rhule and his football team for never giving up, even down 31-24 after the pick-six from Dylan Raiola.

This second straight come-from-behind win means the team can pack swagger and confidence to P.J. Fleck’s Boathouse, where the Huskers haven’t won in forever.

It’s not far-fetched to make the assertion that Nebraska doesn’t win a game like this before this season. But the belief is there now.

A big tip of the cap on this night to Rhule’s crew because this was as scintillating as it gets for Big Red fans, especially those in the stadium.

As Nebraska hits the midway point of its season, the best way to describe them is narrative busters.
