Lincoln, Neb. — Terran Petteway and Shavon Shields combined for 46 points, but it was Nebraska's role players who made the key plays down the stretch in a 70-65 victory over Florida State Monday evening.

Florida State had trimmed an 18-point deficit to 62-61 before a pair of key plays by Tarin Smith and David Rivers allowed Nebraska (5-1) to hold on. After a scramble after a missed shot, Benny Parker got the ball to Smith at the top of the key, and the freshman drove and found Rivers for a layup to give the Huskers a three-point lead with 1:57 left.

On the Huskers' next possession, Shields found Smith in the corner and the freshman hit his second 3-pointer of the season, staking the Huskers with a six-point lead with 1:07 left. The Huskers forced a turnover, and Shields salted the game with two free throws to push the lead to seven, and Nebraska held on for a big road win.

Petteway led all scorers with 25 points and five rebounds, while Shields added 21 points and eight rebounds for the victors.

Nebraska played its best first half of the season, overcoming foul trouble and holding Florida State to 28 percent shooting from the floor in posting a 37-21 halftime lead.

Nebraska got off to a quick start, jumping to a 13-7 lead with long range shooting, as Nebraska hit its first three 3-pointers, including a pair from Walter Pitchford. The Huskers went into a cold spell, missing six straight shots from the floor as Florida State fought back.

The Seminoles scored seven straight points to take their first lead at 14-13 on a Boris Bojanovsky basket with 10:18 left in the half before he Huskers roared back. A Shavon Shields 3-pointer started a 18-1 Husker spurt, as the junior had nine of his 15 first half points in the surge, as Nebraska took a 31-15 lead after a steal and dunk by Petteway, who had 14 first-half points.

Nebraska shined on the defensive end despite the foul trouble, allowing only one field goal in the final 10 minutes of the half took a 16-point lead into the locker room.

Nebraska quickly extended the lead to 18 points on two occasions, the last being at 41-23 after a Shields basket with 19:03 left, and led 42-26 before the Seminoles made a run. A 3-pointer from Xavier Rathman-Mayes, who was held scoreless in the first half, started the spurt and, as the Seminoles cut the Husker lead to 42-34 lead on another Rathan-Mayes jumper with 15:04 left.

The Huskers, who had two players foul out and both post players with four fouls with 15 minutes left, pushed the lead back to 47-37 before the Seminoles charged back. FSU, which shot 52 percent in the second half, hit eight of its first 11 shots and got within 47-43 after two free throws from Jaquez Smith with 10:31 left.

The Seminoles cut the lead to 51-47 before Parker ended the run with a 3-pointer with 8:42 left and Parker came up with another big play a few minutes later with a layup and two free throws to give NU a 60-53 lead with 5:55 left.

Florida State made one last run, using a 9-2 run to pull within 62-61 after a pair of Aaron Thomas free throws with 2:18 left before Rivers' basket kept the Huskers in the lead.

Rathman-Mayes finished with 17 points - all in the second half - while Bojanovsky added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Florida State (3-4).

The Huskers return to action Sunday evening, as they host the Creighton Bluejays at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network and on the Husker Sports Radio Network.
