Lincoln, Neb. — The No. 11 Nebraska volleyball team (17-4, 10-2) recorded its 10th conference win of the 2013 season on Saturday night, holding off the Northwestern Wildcats 3-2 (21-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-17, 15-13).
The Huskers saw two players post double-doubles as Kelsey Robinson notched 21 kills and 16 digs, while Kadie Rolfzen had 18 kills and a career-high 17 digs. Amber Rolfzen posted 11 kills and a .320 hitting clip, while Brenna Lyles had 15 digs in her first career start. Cecilia Hall led NU at the net with 10 blocks on the night, while Mary Pollmiller dished out 50 assists.
The Huskers hit .248 for the match, while Northwestern his .190. NU out-blocked the Wildcats 18-7, tying a season-high blocking total. The Huskers also out-dug Northwestern 63-58.
Nebraska is back in action on the road next weekend as the Huskers face Wisconsin on Friday, Nov. 8 and Minnesota on Friday, Nov. 10.
The Huskers tied the first set at 10-10 on a kill by Hall, but Northwestern came back and took a 14-11 lead and forced Nebraska to call a timeout. A kill from Robinson put the Huskers within 19-17, but Northwestern stretched its lead to 22-18. The Huskers pushed the Wildcats to two set points, but Northwestern won the first set 25-21.
Robinson posted six kills in the first set, while Pollmiller dished out 13 assists. Nebraska hit .200 for the set, while Northwestern hit .268.
The Huskers and Wildcats traded leads early in the second set, but three straight errors from Northwestern and a kill from Robinson put the Huskers up 15-13. Nebraska reeled off five-straight points to take a 21-14 on a kill from Kadie Rolfzen as Northwestern called its final timeout. Nebraska finished off the Wildcats 25-17 to win the set and tie the match at 1-1.
Kadie Rolfzen posted five kills in the set, as Amber Rolfzen had three. The Huskers hit .545 for the set, while Northwestern hit just .214. Nebraska out-blocked Northwestern 4-0.
Northwestern took a 10-6 lead to open the third set and the Wildcats continued to hold onto the lead as they went up 19-15. A double-block from Kadie Rolfzen and Haggerty tied the set at 19-19, but Northwestern held on to win the third set 25-21.
Robinson tallied seven kills in the third set, as Kadie Rolfzen had four. Pollmiller handed out 10 assists, but the Huskers hit just .068. Northwestern hit at a clip of .103 and both teams had three blocks.
An ace from Lyles tied the fourth set at 5-5 and ignited the Huskers to take a 10-6 lead. A huge kill from Kadie Rolfzen made it 13-9, Huskers, while Nebraska used a 4-0 run to go up 19-11. Back-to-back double stuff blocks from Amber Rolfzen and Haggerty helped the Huskers to a 22-14 lead and Nebraska went on to win the fourth set 25-17.
Kadie Rolfzen had six kills in the fourth set, while Amber Rolfzen had four. Pollmiller posted 10 assists as the Huskers hit .478. Northwestern hit .219 for the set.
A double-block from Pollmiller and Haggerty gave Nebraska a 5-3 lead to open the fifth set, and Robinson was clutch down the stretched as she notched two kills and a double-block with Haggerty to give NU a 9-4 lead. The Huskers had the lead at 12-8, but Northwestern came back to tie the set at 12-12. Nebraska held on in the end, winning the fifth set 15-13.
Robinson tallied five kills on seven swings in the fifth set. The Huskers hit. 167 as a team and Northwestern hit .111. Nebraska out-blocked the Wildcats 3-1.
