The ultimate sacrifice
Roscoe Dusty Rhodes was captain-elect of the Cornhuskers
in 1918 but served his country instead and lost his life in
France that year during World War I. He is part of the
inspiration for the Memorial Stadium name. Walter Butch
Luther, a starting halfback for Nebraska in the 1941 Rose
Bowl, was killed in combat in Italy in 1945 during World
War II and was awarded the Silver Star posthumously.
