HUSKER DAN'S ARMY
Dear Readers:
As many of you know, "Husker Dan's Army" began two years
ago after I received an email from a soldier stationed in Iraq. He
asked if I could help him get Husker memorabilia (caps, T-shirts,
sweatshirts etc.) that he could hand out to the Iraqi children whom
he saw each day.
One of the first groups to take the lead in helping this soldier,
was the Northeast Kansans For Nebraska, a Husker alumni group in Topeka,
Kansas.
And since that time, there have been many more requests for Husker
items, including DVDs of Husker football games. Many of these soldiers
are stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq and don't have access to phones
or to the Internet. These kids are great Husker fans who are risking
their lives every day. They don't ask for much-they just love their
Husker football team.
Until now, there hasn't been a real efficient way to respond to their
wishes. Now there is a one.
Effective immediately, The Northeast Kansans For Nebraska (www.neks4nebraska.com)
is now the official site of Husker Dan's Army. A special account has
been set up so that Husker fans everywhere can donate money to be
used to send Husker items such as posters, caps, jerseys, T-shirts,
sweatshirts, media guides etc. overseas The Red Zone in Omaha has
offered to let us buy, on a discounted basis, all Husker items (non-DVDs)
that are designated for HDA. The Red Zone has even offered to pay
all the shipping costs. Shot Kleen with HuskerVision at UNL is providing
Husker game DVDs.
In addition, Jim Rose, "The Voice of the Huskers", is providing
copies of the radio broadcasts of all Husker football games. The replays
will be emailed to any service personnel who requests them. Also,
The Husker Elvises are providing autographed posters that will be
included in the Husker packages.
I've met Gary McGirr and the rest of the officers of the NEK4NE and
I can assure you that they run a first class organization. The group
volunteers in soup kitchens; they even raise money to provide scholarships
for needy kids to attend the University of Nebraska. They stand ready
to accept your donations.
