RETIRED JERSEYS

The university honors all major national award winners by retiring their jerseys, but the player’s number remains available to active Huskers. The only numbers to be retired are 20, 60 and 64. After the 1949 season, the N Club voted to retire No. 60 in honor of Tom “Train Wreck” Novak, a four-time All-Big Seven choice and a 1949 All-American. Bob Brown’s No. 64 was permanently retired in 2004 after Brown, already in the College Football Hall of Fame, became just the third Husker in history to earn a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Johnny Rodgers’ No. 20 is back in retirement after having been worn by his son, Terry, in the 1980s and by numerous other players through 2008.
