His one win was a doozy

The Huskers are 2-1 against teams coached by Howard Schnellenberger, but the one loss is what fans probably remember most.

Nebraska faced his Miami Hurricanes in the 1984 Orange Bowl. An upset win gave Schnellenberger and Miami a breakthrough national title and cost Tom Osborne the same. But Osborne's decision to eschew a tie and go for a win in the game's final minute earned Dr. Tom and the Nebraska program nationwide respect.

A dozen seasons later, Nebraska squared off against Schnellenberger's Oklahoma Sooners in the Big Eight's very last conference game. A shutout loss to the Huskers on that 1995 November day in Lincoln helped send Schnellenberger out the door after just one season (5-5-1) as OU's coach.

The 2009 Huskers had no trouble with Schnellenberger's Florida Atlantic squad in a 49-3 season-opening romp.

Schnellenberger also was the offensive coordinator for the Alabama team that beat Nebraska in the 1966 Orange Bowl.
