Big second half powers victory over Huskies

Nebraska’s offense produced its best performance of the season and the Husker special teams made big plays again to power NU to a 51-38 win over Washington.

The Huskers rolled up 31 second-half points on their way to victory.

Rex Burkhead notched the fifth 100-yard rushing game of his career, leading a rushing attack that amassed a season-high 309 yards on the ground. The Huskers finished with 464 yards of total offense.

Arguably the biggest play of the game came on Mathew May’s recovery of a muffed kickoff early in third quarter. Washington’s Bishop Sankey dropped the ball in the end zone and kicked it forward, and May made a diving recovery at the UW 1.

One play later, Burkhead plunged over the top for his second one-yard TD run in a nine-second span, giving the Huskers a 17-point lead.

Nebraska improved to 3-0 and became the first Husker team since 1995 to score 40 or more points in each of its first three games.

Commentary

While it will never be mistaken for the 1994 and 1995 versions of the Pipeline, the young Husker o-line is starting to grow up.

A different Husker team showed up for the second half. Or maybe this was a reunion from the 1980s.

Chalk up some of the late letdown to human nature, some of it to conservative strategy.

Burkhead may not be the guy who will break the 70-yard run for you, but he does so many things on the football field that some fans apparently don’t appreciate.

The Huskies defense wasn't ready to compete against a team as good as Nebraska.

Sure there were big plays. But there were also drives.
