Reds 33, Whites 21
Spring game: April 25, 1992
Redshirt freshman Tony Veland threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the Reds defeated the Whites 33-21 in the annual scrimmage that ends Nebraska's spring drills.
Veland led all rushers with 55 yards. He said he gained confidence throughout spring practice and during Saturday's game.
Veland became the No. 1 quarterback two weeks ago when senior Mike Grant broke his collarbone. Grant was the Cornhuskers' only returning experienced signal caller.
Coach Tom Osborne said Veland does not have the starting job locked up. Defensive back Tyrone Byrd picked off Veland's first pass Saturday and ran it in from the 10-yard line for a touchdown.
Osborne said he was pleased with spring practice and the spring game, which pitted his top offensive unit on the Red team against the No. 1 defense on the White squad.
