Wildcats register stunning shutout

Kansas State’s underdog Wildcats socked the Cornhuskers early and hung on for a stunning 12-0 upset before 67,466 Homecoming fans.

On their first play, the Wildcats hit the Huskers with a 47-yard pass from Lynn Dickey to Dave Jones, and three plays later they had a 6-0 lead just 2½ minutes into the first quarter.

The Husker offense never got inside the K-State 31, and the Wildcats kicked two fourth-quarter field goals to pad their lead.

K-State’s defense kept the Huskers in check throughout the game. The Scarlet attack was held to 78 yards on the ground and only 7 of 28 successful passes.

It was only the second shutout for the Cornhuskers under Coach Bob Devaney.

H’MAX NOTES: It was KSU’s first conference win since 1964, the Wildcats’ first shutout since 1955 and their first victory over Nebraska since 1959. … ABC’s Beano Cook rated it as college football’s biggest upset of 1968. … The game was played in 30-degree weather. … Nebraska’s starting quarterback, Ernie Sigler, finished with two completions, two interceptions and a net two yards of total offense (20 passing, minus-18 rushing).
