Recap

Fourth-down score in final minute caps Husker rally from 14-0 deficit

Nebraska spotted Oklahoma State 14 points, then battled back for one of the Huskers’ patented, garrison finishes, 21-20, before 35,000 fans in Stillwater.

After a scoreless first half, the Cowboys caught the Huskers napping early in the third quarter and jumped in front 6-0 on a 68-yard TD pass. They followed that with an 80-yard drive for a 14-0 lead.

Nebraska came back to tie on two long drives and it was 14-14 with 10:50 left in the game. A fumbled punt gave OSU a break at the Husker 24 and the Cowboys scored in four plays. Two tries for two points failed and OSU led 20-14 with 7:03 left.

Then the Cornhuskers came to life, marching 80 yards in 16 plays to score the tying touchdown with only 57 seconds left as Ernie Sigler hit Jim McFarland with a five-yard pass on a fourth down.

Paul Rogers then kicked the winning point, his third game-winning boot of the year.

Joe Orduna starred on the ground, netting 145 yards for the Huskers, and Sigler passed for 141 yards.

H’MAX NOTES

• After Nebraska’s go-ahead score, OSU drove to the Nebraska 27 on two pass completions and an interference penalty. Hermann Eben tried a 44-yard field goal with six seconds left, but it was short and wide.

• OSU coach Phil Cutchin’s decision to go for two points after the Cowboys’ final touchdown generated some second-guessing. OSU had two cracks at it because of an offside penalty against Nebraska on the first attempt.

• Nebraska’s first touchdown drive was kept alive by a 13-yard pass to the OSU 16 from Sigler to Mick Ziegler on fourth-and-10.

• Oklahoma State was held to 30 yards of total offense during the first half.

• It was the second time the 1968 Huskers overcame a 14-0 deficit on the road to win.
