Huskers open with road win over Huskies

Rebuilding Nebraska was really an unknown quantity against favored Washington in the 1967 opener, but the Cornhuskers pulled off a 17-7 victory in rousing fashion before 57,481 fans.

Recovering a fumbled punt in the first quarter, the Huskers drove 33 yards to score in nine plays. The next time they got the ball, rookie quarterback Frank Patrick – with the aid of a 31-yard pass to Dennis Morrison – took the Scarlets 43 yards to score in another nine plays.

But the Huskies weren’t stunned by a 14-0 deficit and three plays after the kickoff, quarterback Tom Sparlin tore through Nebraska’s vaunted defense 48 yards for a TD.

Bill Bomberger’s 20-yard field goal just before the half wound up the scoring.

Game stories
H’Max notes
  • Nebraska’s second touchdown drive covered 43 yards in eight plays and was aided by a Washington piling-on penalty after Dick Davis was thrown for a six-yard loss on third and 10. That set up a fourth and one at the Washington 34, and Patrick got the first down on a quarterback sneak.
  • After recovering a fumble at the Nebraska 31 early in the fourth quarter, Washington reached the Nebraska 18 but was stopped on fourth and three on a tackle by middle guard Wayne Meylan, who was named national lineman of the week.
  • The temperature in Seattle at game time was an unusually toasty 85, and a UW official said the field-level thermometer hit 105.
