Rebuilding Nebraska was really an unknown quantity against favored Washington in the 1967 opener, but the Cornhuskers pulled off a 17-7 victory in rousing fashion before 57,481 fans.

Recovering a fumbled punt in the first quarter, the Huskers drove 33 yards to score in nine plays. The next time they got the ball, rookie quarterback Frank Patrick — with the aid of a 31-yard pass to Dennis Morrison — took the Scarlets 43 yards to score in another nine plays.

But the Huskies weren't stunned by a 14-0 deficit and three plays after the kickoff, quarterback Tom Sparlin tore through Nebraska's vaunted defense 48 yards for a TD.

Bill Bomberger's 20-yard field goal just before the half wound up the scoring.

H’MAX NOTES: Husker middle guard Wayne Meylan had 13 unassisted tackles and was named national lineman of the week. ... Nebraska's second touchdown drive covered 43 yards in eight plays and was aided by a Washing­ton piling-on penalty after Dick Davis was thrown for a six-yard loss on third and 10. That set up a fourth and one at the Washington 34, and Frank Patrick picked up the first down on a quarterback sneak.
