Huskers stifle Badgers’ attack in shutout win

Nebraska remained unbeaten and registered its second straight shutout with a convincing 37-0 win over the Wisconsin Badgers, keeping intact Coach Bob Devaney’s mark of never losing to a Big Ten team.

A short plunge by Pete Tatman and a 59-yard TD keeper by Fred Duda got the Huskers fired up in the first half and they added two third-quarter tallies to ice the contest.

Nebraska reserves took over late in the third period and with Charlie Winters and Ben Gregory both scoring and turning in fine running shows.

    HuskerMax notes
  • A 49-yard Frank Solich run set up Larry Wachholtz’s field goal just before halftime.
  • A 55-yard punt return by Wachholtz set up Winters’ third-quarter TD.
  • Wisconsin quarterback Chuck Burt was the nation’s third-ranked passer entering the game.
  • Nebraska’s first touchdown came after Wisconsin’s Tom Brigham fumbled a punt and NU’s Dennis Carlson recovered on the UW 31.
