Jennings era starts on a down note
Washington State’s passing attack bewildered the Huskers from the get-go, and the Cougars cruised to a 34-12 victory in Lincoln in Bill Jennings’ first game as Nebraska head coach. An early 74-yard pass from Washington State quarterback Bobby Newman to Don Ellingson was nullified by penalty, but the unfazed Cougars marched downfield and took a 7-0 lead on a 20-yard pass from Newman to Jack Fanning. It was the first of three touchdown connections for the Newman-Fanning tandem.
One-yard TD runs by Nebraska’s Roy Stinnett and Harry Tolly gave the Huskers manageable deficits of 7-6 in the second quarter and 20-12 in the third, but both times the Cougars answered with a pair of touchdowns of their own.
