Whites pull off surprising win in spring game
Scores from long range spiced up the 1954 Huskers’ final spring scrimmage as the Whites surprised the Reds, 25-14.
Whites halfback Don Comstock “stole the show” with his “hard charging and excellent open field running,” wrote the Sunday Journal and Star’s Walt Dobbins. It was Comstock’s 46-yard run in the second quarter that put the Whites ahead for good.
Reds halfback Jon McWilliams opened scoring with a 51-yard punt return. That was followed by three second-quarter TDs by the Whites, including two by Comstock, and the Whites led 19-7 at intermission.
The Reds made it 19-14 when Bob Smith’s 19-yard run capped a 63-yard drive in the third quarter. But the Whites answered with a 64-yard bolt up the middle by halfback Dave Koile for the game’s final score.
“We were still pretty ragged but improved over a week ago,” said coach Bill Glassford, referring to a team scrimmage the previous Saturday.
Attendance was estimated at 6,000 by the Omaha World-Herald and “over 5,000” by the Lincoln Journal Star.
