Newcomers shine in spring finale

With five seconds left, redshirt freshman Conor Booth’s 32-yard run gave “Nebraska” its first lead — and the win — over the “Huskers” in the Big Red’s spring game.

It was a game that featured notable performances by newcomers, none more crowd-pleasing than Jamal Rule’s 75-yards touchdown run earlier in the fourth quarter. The true freshman from North Carolina carried 10 times for 121 yards and was the game’s leading rusher.

Rule’s scoring jaunt down the right sideline came immediately after another true freshman delivered in a big way. Against the wind, Australian placekicker Michael Sarikizis drilled a 49-yard field goal to give the “Huskers” a 17-9 lead.

Anthony Colandera, the transfer quarterback from UNLV, was the game’s leading passer, going 12-of-19 for 80 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. His second TD pass came courtesy of a one-handed highlight-reel grab by sophomore wide receiver Quinn Clark.

Announced attendance was 27,188, lowest for a Husker spring game since 2000.

How refreshing would it be to take a cue from [Fred] Hoiberg and overperform this fall after a relatively quiet offseason?

Welcome to Lincoln, Jamal Rule. The true freshman is easily the best back of the bunch.

While there’s already an idea of who will start on offense come the fall, it’s difficult to project how things will shake out for the Blackshirts.

Saturday might have been a preview of the rollercoaster Nebraska’s offense could be with Colandrea running the show.

It appears offensive line coach Geep Wade and run game coordinator Lonnie Teasley have made quite the impact on Nebraska’s offense and how it operates.

Defensive line transfer Jahsear Whittington flashed as one of the better pass rushers in the game.

NU has added some nice pieces. But it’s a team that didn’t look overly athletic, fast or physical.

Colandrea showed escapability from the pocket. ... His athleticism provides Nebraska with an offensive weapon it has not enjoyed in recent seasons.
