Huskers, Raiola gobbled up by Gophers

Dylan Raiola was sacked nine times and the Blackshirts struggled to finish tackles as Minnesota dominated the game in every respect, upsetting the Huskers, 24-6.

The Huskers kept it close, 7-6, in the first half even as Raiola suffered five of his sacks. Two Nebraska drives inside the Minnesota 15 bogged down and resulted in field goals, while the Gophers got their touchdown after a 71-yard run to the NU 1.

The Gophers set the tone for the final two quarters by driving 98 yards for a touchdown on their first possession to make it a 14-6 game, moving the ball on the ground and through the air with relative ease. A fourth-down penalty did help keep that drive alive.

The Gophers tacked on 10 more points in the fourth quarter, essentially putting the game out of reach for the punchless visitors, who never really threatened after intermission. Even a garbage-time drive was stuffed on fourth down on the Minnesota 37 with three minutes left.

Commentary

Stryker

There were several demons the Huskers had a chance to slay ... They fed and nurtured those demons instead.

Stukenholtz

What was clear was how prepared the Golden Gophers were compared to Rhule’s Huskers.

HuskerMax/On SI
Schubert

Nebraska has been a Big Ten team for 14 years now, and it can be argued they still haven’t adjusted to the conference or its traditional style of play.

Henry

Not that Nebraska has protected the quarterback at a high level ... but the assignment gets tougher when backups are in the game.

HuskerMax/On SI
Christopherson

It was a team with a small margin for error playing bad football and not being as hungry as the dogs lined up on the other side.

Shatel

The Huskers reverted back to a team they thought they had left behind.

What’s next for Nebraska? Well, I’m guessing it’ll be a quieter week on the Rhule-to-Penn State speculation front.

HuskerOnline
Sherman

The QB shouldered the blame, but Rhule and the coordinators and the O-line are equally wearing this defeat.

The Athletic
Beecham

At this point in Rhule’s tenure, it doesn’t feel like a steady climb. More like a seasonal cycle.
