Hawkeyes roll despite Johnson’s stellar game
After a tightly contested first half, Iowa controlled the final 30 minutes of play and cruised to a 40-16 win in Lincoln.
Not much went right for the Huskers after their second offensive possession. Emmett Johnson ran 70 yards down the right sideline to set up what turned out to be Nebraska’s only touchdown of the game.
Two subsequent forays into the red zone produced field goals instead of touchdowns, and Nebraska trailed 24-16 at the break.
A controversial no-call early in the third quarter didn’t help the Huskers’ cause. Jacory Barney fumbled a punt on a hard hit that appeared to be targeting, resulting in a safety and a 26-16 lead for the Hawkeyes. Iowa followed that up with touchdown drives of 71 and 63 yards to put the game away.
The lion’s share of Nebraska’s 300 yards of offense came courtesy of Johnson. The junior running back rushed for 217 yards and picked up 22 yards on a pair of pass receptions.
Playing through a first-half hamstring injury, freshman quarterback TJ Lateef had a rough outing, completing just 9 of 24 passes for 69 yards. He had no completions during a 32½-minute stretch from late in the first quarter to early in the fourth.
