Blackshirts deliver in bowl victory over the Eagles

Four fourth-down stops by the Blackshirts – including two inside the Nebraska 10 – kept Boston College’s offense off the scoreboard until the game’s final seven minutes, and the Huskers hung on for their first bowl win since 2015.

The defense also forced a second-half turnover that proved to be important. Linebacker John Bullock knocked the ball loose from BC’s quarterback and Elijah Jeudy recovered, setting up a 50-yard drive that extended the Huskers’ lead to 20-2 late in the third quarter. Emmett Johnson capped that possession by taking a fourth-and-3 swing pass 13 yards for a touchdown.

It turned out Nebraska needed those insurance points.

BC made things suspenseful late in the fourth quarter, scoring two touchdowns less than two minutes apart, the second one coming immediately after a blocked punt. The Huskers’ lead was now down to five points, and more than four minutes remained.

This time it was the offense that slammed the door on the Eagles. The Huskers proceeded to run out the clock, with New York’s own Rahmir Johnson essentially sealing the win with a determined fourth-and-one run up the middle for 11 yards with a little over two minutes left. Playing despite having recently lost his mother, he was named the game’s MVP.

The Huskers led 13-2 at halftime courtesy of short TD runs by Rahmir Johnson and Kwinten Ives. The Eagles got their deuce by blocking the PAT attempt after the Huskers’ second touchdown and returning it to the opposite end zone. Those would be BC’s only points until 6:11 remained in the game.

Commentary

Stryker

These seniors finished what they started, and got Nebraska over a gigantic hump to become a bowl qualifier — and winner.

Christopherson

Once in a while you still get that guy who, despite every twist and turn, wore one uniform. His team. And once in an even greater while he writes the ending everyone hoped he would.

Rubek

Even with the losses of several defensive standouts and their coach, the Blackshirts put forth a performance to celebrate.

Resilience. Pride. Joy. You can’t build a championship contender without them. This team restored those virtues.

What Rahmir did not know at the time of his final Husker carry? That run gave him precisely 1,000 yards rushing for his career. After everything he’s been through? Getting to 1,000 yards was no small feat.

Take a wide look at how Nebraska won the Pinstripe Bowl (perhaps, from the upper deck at Yankee Stadium). You'll see a formula for winning football.
