The fifth-ranked Nebraska volleyball team swept Ohio, 25-17, 25-14, 25-17, on Friday afternoon in its first match of the Ameritas Players Challenge at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Mikaela Foecke pounded 17 kills with just one error for a .593 hitting percentage, and Lauren Stivrins had nine kills, five blocks and served a career-high four aces to lift the Huskers (2-1).

Nebraska was sharp offensively, hitting a season-best .349, and produced nine blocks defensively. Jazz Sweet had six kills and three blocks, while Sami Slaughter added five kills. Callie Schwarzenbach had four blocks with a pair of kills. Nicklin Hames had 28 assists and five digs, while Kenzie Maloney had a team-best 11 digs.

The Huskers out-aced Ohio, 7-2, and had a 38-27 advantage in digs.

The win was the 694th career win for head coach John Cook, tying him with Terry Pettit on the all-time career wins list.

Ohio fell to 1-3 on the season. Lizzie Stephens led the Bobcats with seven kills.

Set 1: The Huskers went on an 8-1 run to take a 14-8 lead. Hames and Foecke each had two kills, and Stivrins served three aces during the spurt. The Bobcats got back within 16-14 after four straight points, but Foecke earned sideout for the Huskers with a kill, then placed a back-row shot to the middle of the court and followed with an ace serve to begin a 6-0 run and restore a 22-14 lead. A Sami Slaughter kill ended the set at 25-17. NU hit .423 in the first set and held Ohio to .143.

Set 2: Foecke again sparked the Huskers with three early kills, and Stivrins added two blocks and a kill to boost NU to a 9-2 lead. The Huskers continued to hammer away, taking a 14-4 lead after Foecke’s ninth kill on her 14th swing. Nebraska pulled away to the 25-14 win, hitting .355 with six blocks. Stivrins, Schwarzenbach and Sweet each had three blocks in the set.

Set 3: Nebraska used a 10-0 run to gain separation at 14-7. Foecke had four more kills and Megan Miller served the Huskers’ sixth ace. NU closed out the sweep, 25-17, with Foecke terminating seven times on eight swings in the set.

Up Next: The Huskers play Wake Forest at 7:30 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Friday. Wake Forest fell to Santa Clara, 3-1, earlier Friday.
