Bryant, Lee Help Huskers Past Red Wolves: Sophomore I-back Tre Bryant erupted for a career-high 192 yards to help carry Nebraska to a 43-36 win over Arkansas State.

Bryant’s big night in his first career start helped make a winner of quarterback Tanner Lee in his Husker debut. Lee completed 19 of 32 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns.

Nebraska still had to find a way to survive in the closing seconds against a high-flying Arkansas State passing attack. Justice Hansen tied the Nebraska individual opponent passing record by completing 46 throws.

Commentary

The inability of Husker defenders to get off blocks was a major issue.

The Red Wolves countered Diaco’s heat up the gut by playing pitch and catch with abandon on the perimeter.

[Fans] surely expected much more from a band of defenders that seemed to buy in to Diaco’s scheme.

Lincoln Journal Star
Hamar

The Red Wolves ... had a chance partially because the Huskers didn’t have that killer instinct they will need.

Grand Island Independent

Diaco is not a miracle worker. There are no magic wands or solutions when you are teaching a new scheme.

If opening night dishes this kind of stress, will anyone make it to November?

For a defense that showed so many flashes of potential this offseason, Saturday night proved to be quite the reality check.

The lack of pass rush and pressure by the defense was a real concern.

Stryker

The Huskers generated almost no pass rush against a Red Wolf offensive line that entered the game with a combined two starts to its credit.

Sometimes in today’s football, especially against an uber-spread team like Arkansas State, this is what winning defense looks like. It’s not always pretty.
