Huskers edge Nittany Lions on difficult day

Rex Burkhead pounded out 121 yards rushing and linebacker Lavonte David made a key fourth-down stop late in the game to help No. 19 Nebraska to a 17-14 win over No. 12 Penn State.

It was an emotionally charged day at Beaver Stadium just days after the dismissal of Penn State coach Joe Paterno in connection with the Jerry Sandusky sexual-abuse scandal.

The Blackshirts got stops on Penn State’s final two possessions to secure the win.

After Penn State cut Nebraska’s lead to 17-14, the Huskers went 3-and-out, giving the ball back to PSU on its own 11 after a 61-yard Brett Maher punt. The Nittany Lions needed just three plays to reach their own 36, but there the Blackshirts stiffened, and Penn State turned the ball over on downs when linebacker Lavonte David stuffed running back Silas Redd on fourth-and-1. (See video at top of page.)

That gave Nebraska the ball with 1:49 remaining and a chance to end the game, but Penn State made a fourth-down stop of its own to regain possession at its own 28 with 49 seconds left. PSU could get no farther than its own 46 before time expired.

Nebraska had to fight, claw, and go deep into the playbook to scratch out a three-point win over a team that has very little offensive punch.
