Huskers Roll in Callahan’s Opener

Sophomore quarterback Joe Dailey produced six touchdowns to tie the Nebraska single-game record and lead the Huskers to a 56-17 victory over Western Illinois in Coach Bill Callahan’s debut.

In his first starting appearance, Dailey completed 15 of 30 pass attempts for 218 yards to go with four touchdowns and four interceptions.

Dailey’s four passing scores were the most by a Nebraska quarterback since Eric Crouch had five against Iowa in 2000. Dailey also rushed four times for 28 yards and two more scores.

Dailey directed the Huskers to 581 yards of total offense, including 363 rushing yards. Cory Ross and Tierre Green each surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark.

Junior tight end Matt Herian recorded seven receptions for 98 yards and two touchdowns, while senior receiver Willie Amos had two catches for 54 yards and two TDs.

Commentary

Colonel Mustard

With all the shifting that we did in a new offense, the execution was very impressive.

Shatel

For now, it's safe to say that Nebraska football has survived the invasion of the option snatchers from the NFL.

Omaha World-Herald
Mabry

What a night for Callahan, who made good on his promise to "take what we want" from the Western Illinois defense.

Lincoln Journal Star
McKeever

The book on Big Red in recent years is to stay close and patient on offense, because you aren't likely to face a big deficit. Well, the game's changed.

Lincoln Journal Star
Douglass

The defense, thought to be the Huskers' strength, had more than its share of breakdowns. NU's special teams play was hold-your-nose awful.
