Huskers enjoy easy sledding on snowy day

Johnny Rodgers got Nebraska rolling with a record-tying 52-yard punt return and the Cornhuskers romped to a 59-7 win over Kansas State.

It was a bounce-back from Iowa State and a tune-up for Oklahoma as Coach Bob Devaney got his 100th Nebraska victory before 75,079 fans who sat through snow showers all afternoon. After the game Nebraska accepted the Orange Bowl bid to play Notre Dame.

Rodgers tied the NCAA record for punt return TDs and kick return TDs when he opened the scoring with a 52-yard sprint in the first quarter. Rich Sanger added a field goal for a 10-0 lead, and then the Huskers put the Wildcats away with a 28-point second quarter.

Rodgers also scored on an eight-yard run, while Gary Dixon, Bob Revelle and Bill Olds also got on the board before Devaney brought In the reserves in the second quarter.

Jeff Moran, whose 72-yard run from the NU two set up the Huskers’ second TD, led all rushers with 129 yards – just 21 yards shy of the entire Wildcat team production – while Dave Humm hit seven of 13 passes for 96 yards and two TDs.

Thus, Nebraska would take an 8-1-1 record into the Oklahoma game the following Thursday, with a win clinching the 1972 Big 8 title.
