Recap
THE FIRST SPRING GAME?

Long kick return sets up Reds’ win

The Reds’ Herb Dewitz returned the opening second-half kickoff 95 yards to the Blues’ 1-yard line, setting up the only score in Friday afternoon’s spring football game at Nebraska Field. The Reds’ 6-0 victory wrapped up the Cornhuskers’ spring practices.

Quarterback Glen “Pete” Preston plunged over center for the Reds’ touchdown. His dropkick for the PAT failed.

The Blues lost a chance to come away with at least a tie when Bob Russel fumbled on the Reds’ 1-yard line after a 30-yard pass from team captain Harold “Chick” Hartley.

Head coach Fred Dawson called it “the scrappiest and best spring practice game I ever saw.”

The Lincoln Star said the standout players for the Reds were halfback Dewitz, Preston, end Andrew Schoeppel and center Carl Peterson, while the Blues’ stalwarts were halfback Hartley, quarterback Russel, guard Joy Berquist and end Leo Scherer.

NOTES

• As far as HuskerMax can determine, this was the first Nebraska football spring game. If you have evidence of an earlier one, please let us know.

• The novelty of a spring football game was evident in the Omaha World-Herald’s preview: “Who said football was a fall sport? A squad of forty-five University of Nebraska pigskin enthusiasts getting in shape for the fall campaign will ring the curtain down on the spring training season tomorrow by staging a real honest-to-goodness football game.”

• No attendance figure was available. In previewing the game, the Daily Nebraskan said admission was free and “everybody in the University is invited to see this battle royal.”
