Nebraska struck early, fought off a Colorado comeback and socked home two late touchdowns to beat the Buffaloes, 29-13.
Nebraska grabbed a 12-0 first-quarter lead on two long Van Brownson-to-Guy Ingles TD passes but had to settle for a 12-7 halftime margin. Paul Rogers’ 46-yard field goal made it 15-7 in the third quarter.
Then Colorado roared back to make it 15-13 with 11:22 left in the game, but Larry Jacobson’s tackle of Cliff Branch on the Buffs’ two-point try kept the Buffs from tying the game. Jeff Kinney then returned the ensuing kickoff 79 yards to set up a Husker touchdown, and Jacobson recovered a Branch fumble at the CU 40 to set up another.
Colorado’s John Keyworth dented the Blackshirts for 118 yards on 24 carries. The Buffs surprised Nebraska by using speedy receiver Branch as a wingback, and he gained 95 yards on just nine carries.
