That First Championship Season
Oct. 30: Ready to rumble with the Buffs.

The erratic but talented Colorado Buffaloes were not being taken lightly in the newspapers’ final pregame wrap-ups.

The Buffs’ upset of Penn State in September and their 1969 defeat of Big Eight co-champ Missouri were just two examples of Colorado bringing its “A” game against a highly ranked opponent.

No. 4 Nebraska was an 11½-point favorite. The Lincoln Journal’s Don Forsythe predicted a 30-17 Husker win, but he said CU had a “great chance” to pull off an upset in Boulder.

With two-thirds of the country getting ABC’s regional telecast, the game was an opportunity for the Huskers to burnish their credentials as one of the nation’s top teams. About 15,000 Big Red fans were expected in the stands at sold-out Folsom field.
