Van Brownson rested his sore throwing elbow during Thursday’s practice, and coach Bob Devaney said the quarterback job would remain fluid up until game time Saturday at Iowa State.

Jerry Tagge, the Huskers’ starter in the first five games, was ready to go if Brownson could not play. The travel roster also included third-teamer Bob Jones.

In Ames, Iowa State practiced Thursday in sweat clothes, wrapping up a week that included just one contact session. Coach Johnny Majors said the Cyclones “could not afford to get ourselves beaten up in practice” and focused instead on getting “mentally ready.”

The Lincoln Star’s Hal Brown picked the Huskers to win by four touchdowns.
