Nov. 4: Huskers get in work on natural turf.

Drier weather allowed the Huskers to spend Wednesday afternoon on the grass practice fields. Coach Bob Devaney said that was important in preparation for the game on Iowa State’s natural turf.

“The players get accustomed to making sharper cuts on the AstroTurf that you can’t make on natural grass,” Devaney said. As a result, he said, there was some slipping and sliding in the game at Colorado.

Quarterback Van Brownson was throwing again Wednesday after resting a sore elbow.

In Ames, Iowa State coach Johnny Majors said center Dave Pittman was expected to start after being sidelined with a knee injury for three weeks.

ISU assistant coach Ray Greene scouted Nebraska in Boulder and said his task was made simpler by the Huskers’ limited variety of offensive formations.

“I know what Devaney’s game plan is,” Greene said. “ ‘You have to stop me because I’ll run my best stuff at you.’ ”
