Waco, TX - Baylor erupted on a 21-0 run early in the first half and cruised to a 74-62 win over the Nebraska womens basketball team in front of 4,056 fans at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, Nebraska fell to 12-9 overall and 2-6 in Big 12 Conference play, while No. 10 Baylor improved to 17-3 and 5-3 in league play.
Nebraska jumped to a 5-2 lead over the Bears after a K.C. Cowgill three-pointer with 16:52 left in the first half. But after Cowgills three-pointer, Baylor ran off 21 consecutive points, helped by 11 turnovers over the next 8:39, before NU ended the run on Keasha Cannons jumper with 8:13 left in the half.
Sheila Lambert and Stephanie Blackmon keyed the Lady Bears run, with both players scoring six points during the streak.
Baylor continued to pull away from the Huskers throughout the first half, building a 38-17 halftime lead on the strength of 12 points from Blackmon and 10 points from Lambert, while Nebraska committed 18 first-half turnovers.
The Huskers first-half turnover total was higher than their season average per game, as NU averaged just 16.8 turnovers per contest coming into the game. NUs first-half point total was also the fourth-lowest first-half total in school history.
Despite Nebraskas first-half struggles, the Huskers continued to battle, scoring the first five points of the second half to cut the lead to 16 points. The Lady Bears answered Nebraskas run, building the lead back to 26 points in the second half, before a late Husker surge cut the BU lead to just 11 points at 73-62 with 45 seconds left, before a Baylor free throw secured the final margin.
Junior forward Stephanie Jones led the Huskers, scoring all of her career-high 16 points in the second half, while Cannon and Cowgill each scored 10 points to give NU three players in double figures.
Lambert led the Bears with 18 points, while Blackmon added 14 points and Danielle Crockrom pitched in 11 points and seven rebounds.
Nebraska shot 41.3 percent (26-63) from the field including 26.7 percent (4-15) from three-point range, while knocking down 66.7 percent (6-9) of its free throws. The Lady Bears shot just 36.5 percent (23-63) from the field and just 12.5 percent (1-8) from three-point range, but hit 81.8 percent (27-33) of their free throws. Nebraska finished the night with a season-high 27 turnovers, while Baylor committed 20 turnovers. The Lady Bears also outrebounded NU, 44-32.
Nebraska returns home to play host to Missouri (12-7, 3-5) at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 7:05 p.m. The Tigers won the first game between the two teams earlier this season in Columbia, 67-41.
