Huskers smother Hawkeye effort in sweep

Lincoln, Neb. — The No. 13 Nebraska volleyball team (14-4, 7-2) posted its ninth sweep of the season on Wednesday night as the Huskers took down the Iowa Hawkeyes 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-8) at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Kadie Rolfzen led NU on the night with the fifth double-double of her career, posting 11 kills, a career-high 12 digs and hitting at a clip of .500. Kelsey Robinson notched 11 kills on the night and chipped in three aces. Mary Pollmiller dished out 33 assists and added four blocks. The Husker middle duo of Cecilia Hall and Melanie Keil combined for nine kills on 16 error-free swings for a .563 hitting percentage and added eight blocks.

Nebraska hit .388 for the match, while Iowa hit .110. The Huskers notched 11 team blocks, as the Hawkeyes had just three and NU out-dug Iowa 45-31. The eight points scored by Iowa in the third set ties for the fewest points Nebraska has allowed during a 25-point set in a Big Ten match. The Huskers held Iowa to eight points during the third set on Nov. 21, 2012.

To open the first set, Keil recorded a kill for the Huskers and made it 8-4, NU, while a blocking error by the Hawkeyes gave the Huskers a 15-9 lead at the media timeout. Back-to-back kills from Amber Rolfzen and Robinson put the Huskers up 17-10, but Iowa came back with four straight points to make it 18-14, NU. A double-block from Pollmiller and Hall made it 21-16, Huskers, and Nebraska went on to win the first set 25-19.

Robinson posted five kills in the first set, while Amber Rolfzen and Hall each had three kills. Pollmiller tallied 13 assists, while the Huskers hit .333 or the set. Iowa was held to a .010 hitting clip for the set.

A service ace from Ethridge put NU ahead 7-3 in the second set, while Nebraska used an 8-0 run to go up 17-7. A kill from Robinson stretched NU's lead to 20-13, as Nebraska won the second set 25-21.

Kadie Rolfzen tallied six kills in the second set, while Hall and Robinson both had three. The Huskers hit .353 in the set, while Iowa hit at a clip of .323.

Back-to-back kills from Amber Rolfzen led the Huskers as they opened the third set, while an ace from Kadie Rolfzen put the Huskers up 5-1. Nebraska used a 5-0 run to take a 15-3 lead after an attack error by the Hawkeyes and followed that with a 7-0 run that included three aces from Robinson to take a 22-4 advantage. The Huskers held on to close out Iowa 25-8 in the third set.

Amber Rolfzen, Kadie Rolfzen and Kelsey Robinson all tallied three kills in the final set, while the Huskers hit .556 as a team. Iowa notched a -.077 hitting clip and was out-blocked 6-0 by NU.

Nebraska returns to action on Friday, Oct. 25 as the Huskers travel to Columbus, Ohio to face the Ohio State Buckeyes at 6 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed online on the Big Ten Digital Network.
