in Omaha to cap big weekend

Omaha, Neb. — No. 4 Nebraska swept Notre Dame 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-13) in front of 7,386 fans Sunday afternoon at the CenturyLink Center. With the win, the Huskers closed out an impressive opening weekend that included a sweep of Saint Louis and a 3-2 victory over No. 1 UCLA on Saturday night.

Gina Mancuso led Nebraska against the Fighting Irish with 15 kills on 34 swings for a .353 hitting percentage. She also posted 12 digs. Hannah Werth had 11 kills on 22 swings and 13 digs. Lauren Cook recorded 35 assists and 12 digs, while Morgan Broekhuis had nine kills, four aces and six digs.

The Huskers hit .365, holding Notre Dame to a .189 hitting percentage. Nebraska out-dug the Fighting Irish 49-35, while also out-blocking them 11-7.

The Huskers will hit the road for the first time during the 2012 season as they travel to Irvine, Calif., to take on Colgate and UC-Irvine on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Nebraska went up 3-2 in the first set on a kill by Broekhuis. Notre Dame then took the lead 7-6 and Cook tied the match at 7-all. Werth punched in a kill aided by a stellar dig from Cook to make it 14-11, Nebraska. A service ace from Broekhuis put NU up 19-14, and an error by Notre Dame stretched the Huskers' lead to 23-18. Nebraska went on to take the first set 25-19 on a kill by Mancuso.

Mancuso led the Huskers in the first set with six kills, while both Werth and Hayley Thramer had four. Cook recorded 11 assists as NU hit .300 for the set. The Huskers out-dug Notre Dame 22-16 and both teams had three team blocks.

The Huskers took an early 3-0 lead in the second set with a kill by Mancuso. Werth made it 8-4, Nebraska, while Meghan Haggerty came on strong with a kill and solo block, giving Nebraska an 18-12 advantage. A kill by Thramer put the Huskers up 22-17. Notre Dame came within two at 22-20, but Nebraska eventually took the second set 25-21.

Mancuso recorded five kills on 12 swings, while Werth had four kills. Cook tabbed 12 assists as the Huskers hit .300. NU out-dug Notre Dame 17-14, and both teams had four blocks.

Broekhuis helped the Huskers surge ahead in the third set with three service aces to give NU a 13-5 lead. Mancuso recorded back-to-back kills, giving Nebraska 19-8 advantage. NU stretched its lead to 20-9 before an ace by Werth closed the 25-13 third-set victory.

Broekhuis led Nebraska in the third set with five kills on five swings. She also recorded three aces and two digs. Mancuso had four kills on seven swings, and Cook tabbed 12 assists. Nebraska out-blocked Notre Dame 4-0 and out-dug the Fighting Irish 10-5.
